Pep Guardiola has admitted his Manchester City squad is “so, so tired” after their intense Arsenal clash, as he raised concerns over player fatigue ahead of their FA Cup semi-final against Southampton at Wembley.
Guardiola warns of drained squad
The Catalan manager highlighted the physical and emotional toll of City’s relentless schedule, with games every three days stretching his players to the limit. Following a demanding encounter with Arsenal, a quick turnaround for Burnley, and now a trip to London, Guardiola stressed the cumulative effect on his side.
“Arsenal was so demanding emotionally, it's normal,” Guardiola said. “Three days later [Burnley], three days later [Southampton]. Our people were so, so tired. Then take a train, three hours from here to the hotel. Always the grass is thick [at Wembley]. Many thoughts I still have in my mind.”
City boss admits stars are 'so, so tired'
Guardiola pointed to the psychological burden of the title race and constant travel as key factors in the squad’s exhaustion. The manager expressed concern over the Wembley pitch, known for its thick turf, which he believes could increase the risk of injuries during such a physically taxing period.
With little time to recover, the City boss is weighing the risks of fielding his core players, many of whom show signs of burnout. The journey to London and unfamiliar match conditions only add to his unease.
Rotation friction and medical red flags
Limited rotation has reportedly caused frustration among squad players, with several unhappy about their lack of playing time. Guardiola acknowledged the discontent but defended his decisions, citing City’s strong defensive record—just one goal conceded in their last five games—as justification.
“The players who don't aren't too much happy,” he admitted. “Because, you know, the last games we have long weeks. I rotate less. In the last five, six games, we conceded one goal.” He added that medical staff have flagged certain players as injury risks, warning that “if one player is injured right now, it's gone, it is over.”
Wembley showdown with Saints
Manchester City vs Southampton presents a dangerous trap for the Premier League leaders. Southampton, already conquerors of Arsenal this season, are capable of another upset. With Rodri sidelined by a groin injury, Guardiola faces a tough selection call: rely on his fatigued first-teamers or hand opportunities to the frustrated backups.
A slip-up at Wembley could end City’s hopes of a domestic cup double. With fatigue mounting and stakes high, the outcome may hinge on how well Guardiola manages his squad’s physical limits in the final stretch of the season.
