Jesse Lingard is making history as the first Englishman to play in Brazil's top flight, settling into life at Corinthians with his first goal coming in the Copa do Brasil. The 33-year-old, who joined the São Paulo club after leaving FC Seoul, says he chose the move for the challenge and ambition of the club, despite initial surprise from local pundits.
Adapting to Brazilian football
Lingard credits former Manchester United team-mate Memphis Depay for convincing him to join Corinthians, and the Dutchman has helped ease his transition. He made his debut at the iconic Maracanã against Fluminense, describing the experience as "amazing" after months without competitive football.
Just a week after his arrival, manager Dorival Junior was sacked following an eight-match winless run that left the team in the relegation zone. Fernando Diniz, the former Brazil interim coach, has since taken charge, overseeing two wins in the Libertadores.
Fan pressure and language barrier
Lingard has quickly felt the intensity of Corinthians' passionate fanbase, with supporters regularly attending training sessions to voice their expectations. "I'd never experienced it before," he said. "You see how much they want us to win – it pushes you on."
Off the pitch, he’s navigating life without a translator, aiming to learn Portuguese. "The Korean language was very difficult," he said. "Here, I feel like I could actually pick it up." He’s already learning basic phrases for greetings and ordering coffee.
Reflections on Manchester United
Lingard spent two decades at Manchester United, leaving in 2022 after his contract expired. He calls it an "amazing chapter" and remains closely connected, particularly with captain Bruno Fernandes. He believes Michael Carrick, who succeeded Ruben Amorim in January, should be given the permanent role. "He's got that Manchester United DNA," Lingard said. "The lads are doing really well under him."
He praised Fernandes' season, with 18 Premier League assists, saying: "100%. His performances have been extraordinary. He has to be up there" for the Ballon d'Or.
Facing Neymar and World Cup ambitions
Lingard named Neymar and Ronaldinho as his favourite Brazilian players and revealed he occasionally speaks to Neymar. He’s open to facing him if Corinthians play Santos: "It's always good to play against world-class players."
Recalling his viral moment teasing Marcus Rashford for discussing the weather with Neymar, Lingard joked: "There'd be too many memes. I might mention the Brazilian weather... it is sunny!"
Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup in North America, Lingard backs England to go all the way: "We've always had a good chance. I believe in the lads."
