Players hit by illness at Madrid Open

Several top players at the Madrid Open have been struck down by a stomach virus or suspected food poisoning, casting a shadow over the tournament. Coco Gauff, who lost to Linda Noskova in the last 16, was visibly unwell during her previous-round victory over Sorana Cirstea, calling for the physio in the second set and later vomiting on court. Her blood pressure was checked by medical staff following the incident.

Illness spreads among players

The outbreak has led to multiple withdrawals, including world No 1 Iga Swiatek, Marin Cilic and Madison Keys. Swiatek retired from her match against Ann Li, citing a complete lack of energy, describing herself as having "zero stability and zero energy". Cilic pulled out of his clash with Joao Fonseca, confirming he had suffered food poisoning.

Players take precautions

Rumours among the locker room point to contaminated shrimp tacos as the source. In response, Aryna Sabalenka, the current world No 1, revealed she has stuck to a strict diet of chicken breast, rice and salad throughout the tournament. After defeating Naomi Osaka 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 6-2 in a comeback win, Sabalenka said: "So far, so good. I heard that I have to avoid those tacos (laughing). I stick to the same food, same meal that I've been having since the very beginning of the tournament."

Sabalenka eyes title defence

Sabalenka remains on track to defend her Madrid Open title after the hard-fought victory over Osaka, recovering from a set and a break down. Her focus now turns to the quarterfinals, as she aims to maintain her form while avoiding the illness that has disrupted the event.

Tournament organisers have not issued an official statement, but player safety and catering are under scrutiny as the WTA and ATP tours continue in the Spanish capital.
