Man United's unicorn hunt: Why Luis Enrique stands out

Manchester United are weighing their managerial options with one name standing above the rest: Luis Enrique. As Michael Carrick’s interim spell at Old Trafford nears its end, United’s hierarchy are reportedly torn between promoting the former midfielder or pursuing a bolder move for the Paris Saint-Germain boss, seen as one of the few elite coaches who ticks every box.

The search for a modern unicorn

In football recruitment, a “unicorn” refers to a manager who combines proven tactical mastery, major trophy success, media savvy, and the ability to manage both boardroom and dressing room. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have struggled to find such a figure. While Pep Guardiola, Jürgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti have delivered sustained success at City, Liverpool and Real Madrid, United’s search has yielded only short-term fixes.

Luis Enrique is one of only two managers — alongside Guardiola — to win the treble at two different clubs, having achieved it with Barcelona in 2015 and PSG in 2025. His second Champions League title, secured last season, reinforces his status as one of the game’s most accomplished tacticians. With his contract in Paris set to expire in 2027 and no extension yet signed, a window may be opening for United to make a move.

Carrick’s case — and limitations

Michael Carrick has impressed since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, steering United toward likely Champions League qualification. His leadership, understanding of the club’s culture, and man-management have placed him in pole position for the permanent role. But sources indicate United’s ideal candidate must have elite-level experience in out-thinking managers like Guardiola and Luis Enrique in high-stakes competitions — a hurdle Carrick has yet to face.

Why Luis Enrique fits

United previously approached Luis Enrique in 2022 during their search for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor, but he declined to leave his role as Spain coach before the Qatar World Cup. Instead, United appointed Erik ten Hag. Since joining PSG in July 2023, Enrique has rebuilt the squad by moving on Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and Lionel Messi, ushering in a new era built on youth and tactical discipline that culminated in European glory.

While luring him from Paris would demand a major commitment in both sporting ambition and finances, United see Enrique as the only candidate who eliminates the doubts surrounding other potential targets. Andoni Iraola, Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery all carry question marks over their readiness for the United pressure cooker or willingness to adapt to the club’s structure.

If United are serious about returning to the pinnacle of European football, they may have to accept that securing Luis Enrique is no easy task — but he remains the closest thing to a unicorn still available.
