Man United must not 'over celebrate' UCL spot, says Carrick

Michael Carrick has urged Manchester United not to "over celebrate" their imminent qualification for the Champions League, despite a crucial 2-1 victory over Brentford putting them on the brink of a return to Europe's elite competition. The win leaves United needing just two points from their final four matches to secure a top-four finish, ending a two-season absence from the tournament.

Remaining focused after Champions League push

Carrick, who will step down as manager at the end of the season, emphasized that while reaching the Champions League is significant, it should not be seen as the ultimate achievement. "We've given ourselves a great chance, we've put ourselves in a big position," he said. "It's a tough league, it's tough to get wins. To get the amount of wins we've had — the lads have got to take a bit of credit for that."

Despite growing optimism at Old Trafford, Carrick stressed the importance of aiming higher. "The Champions League is one thing, but it's not something that we should be over-celebrating either. We want to be finishing high up the league really and challenging for more points so our season doesn't come to a close when that happens."

Casemiro saluted by fans

Casemiro scored one of United's goals, with Benjamin Sesko adding another in the win over Brentford. The Brazilian midfielder was serenaded by supporters chanting "one more year" after netting his ninth goal of the campaign. However, Carrick confirmed there will be no change of heart regarding his departure. "It's pretty clear," he said. "From both sides it's pretty clear. The situation has helped everything. It means a lot to him and credit to him because he's given absolutely everything and had some big moments for us."

Successor speculation grows

With Carrick's exit confirmed, speculation over his replacement continues. Luis Enrique, currently managing PSG, has been highlighted as a potential ideal candidate, with pundit Mark Ogden describing him as the only manager who "ticks every box" for United's long-term vision.
