Luka Modric undergoes surgery after facial fracture

Luka Modric has undergone successful surgery for multiple facial fractures, AC Milan confirmed, in a race to be fit for Croatia at the upcoming World Cup. The 40-year-old midfielder was injured during last night’s 0-0 Serie A draw against Juventus at San Siro, forced off after an accidental clash of heads with Manuel Locatelli.

Injury and Surgery

The extent of the damage was only confirmed today, revealing a complex fracture of the left cheekbone. The operation took place at the La Madonnina Clinic in Milan, carried out by Dr Luca Autelitano’s medical team, with Milan’s own doctors Stefano Mazzoni and Andrea Bulgheroni present. The club confirmed the procedure was successful and stated that Modric’s season is now over.

Despite the severity, initial assessments suggest the Croatia captain can still feature at the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, provided he wears a protective mask. Recovery from such an injury typically takes six to eight weeks.

Season contribution

Modric, who turned 40 this year, made 36 competitive appearances for Milan in the 2025-26 campaign, scoring two goals and providing three assists. His leadership and composure in midfield remained vital despite his age, with standout moments including a goal in a February win over Pisa SC.

World Cup hopes alive

AC Milan concluded their statement by wishing Modric “a quick recovery in view of the FIFA World Cup”. With the tournament set to begin in June 2026, the Croatia camp will monitor his rehabilitation closely. If all goes well, he could line up with a protective face mask, much like other players have done in past international tournaments.
